

It was like I was missing something, and as the radio is so integral to gameplay, I was okay with this particular sticking point raising the rating a bit more than it would otherwise be. You’ll get through it just fine (afterall, I’ve beat the game several times at this point), but the whole time I felt wrong using the radio. Do I hold left or right? Do I rotate? Do I do a quarter turn? I still don’t know the best way. I never figured out the best way to do this. You control the radio dial with the right joystick.

The dialogue layout is simple and makies interactions between characters quick and natural.īut I stand by this getting a two, for literally one reason: the radio controls. The menus are easy to navigate, and take a cursory glance to get all the information you need. The four main buttons have two functions, with the three upper buttons being mapped to the different dialogue options and the main button being used to interact with the environment. I think it’s unfair to the simplicity of the game. But technically, all the other buttons are used.īut I really hate this rating for the buttons and the graphical interfaces. The notable exceptions being that the shoulder buttons (on the top/back of a controller) are mapped to one thing per side – left is map, right is radio. So, yes, this game does technically use most of the buttons on a standard controller. Intuitive controls using most or all buttons, but with an easy to learn layout. The only reason this is getting a slightly higher grade is because I think a few of the mechanics are a little finicky, but I’ll talk more about that in the tutorial section.Ģ.

There’s no tricks to what you’re supposed to do, there’s no confusion on how to do it. All four mechanics are so easy and simple, you’ll understand them as soon as you see them. I’m sure you noticed I didn’t talk too much about the difficulty of these mechanics, and that’s for one simple reason: they’re easy. And solving the puzzles is the only way you can continue on your adventure. Puzzles in this game are really just doing certain things in the correct order to open the next part of the map. The adventure is aided in these puzzles, though I am using the term pretty loosely. Getting around the island is the major suspense of the game: everytime you go somewhere, you can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen when you get there.Īnd finally is the puzzles. It will also have character’s heads in the zones they’re in, if Alex knows that information. You wind up on an Island (Edward’s Island), and are given a map that shows the zones of the island. The next major aspect would be the exploration. The radio leans hard into the paranormal mystery thing, as most of your clues are given through the radio. The radio tuning functions exactly as you’d think it would, if you’ve ever used a dial to tune a radio.

This gets a later addition, which I personally found to be even easier than the radio tuning. Next you’re introduced to the radio mechanic. It can get frustrating having to interrupt characters just to get a word in, but it does feel realistic. It’s like a real conversation – if the moment is gone, it’s gone. Because of the way the dialogue is set up, there’s no awkward silence as the other characters wait for you to decide what to say. This does a great service to the characters and emotion of the game. The dialogue options will slowly fade if you don’t select them, but if you do you might end up interrupting dialogue you wanted to hear. You play as Alex, who can react to others with one of up to three dialogue options. The first mechanic you are introduced to is dialogue. I mentioned what I think are the four most important aspects of this game, and I’ll go through each mechanic (as best I can) by going over how they service those aspects.
